4 Weeks Before Your Move

This is when the big decisions happen. Knock these out early and everything else gets easier.

Book your moving company. If you are moving during peak season (May through September), four weeks is the minimum lead time for booking a quality crew in St. Petersburg. During the off-season, two to three weeks is usually fine, but earlier is always better. Request a free quote to get your date locked in.

Notify your landlord or HOA. If you are renting, check your lease for move-out notice requirements. Most St. Petersburg leases require 30 to 60 days written notice. If you live in a condo or managed community, contact your HOA or building manager to learn about elevator reservations, loading dock hours, move-in fees, and certificate of insurance requirements.

Start decluttering. Moving is the best excuse to get rid of things you no longer need. Go room by room and sort items into keep, donate, sell, and trash piles. The less you move, the less you pay. St. Petersburg has several donation drop-off points including Goodwill locations on 34th Street and 4th Street, and the Salvation Army on 22nd Avenue South.

Set up mail forwarding. Visit USPS.com or your local post office to set up mail forwarding to your new address. This takes effect in about a week, so doing it now keeps you ahead of the timeline.

Gather important documents. Collect birth certificates, passports, medical records, insurance policies, and financial documents. These should travel with you personally, not on the moving truck.

2 Weeks Before Your Move

Now it is time to get into the details.

Start packing non-essential rooms. Guest bedrooms, storage closets, bookshelves, and seasonal items can all be boxed up now without disrupting your daily routine. Label every box with the room name and a brief description of contents on at least two sides.

Arrange utility transfers. Contact Duke Energy, the City of St. Petersburg water department, and your internet provider to schedule disconnection at your old address and connection at your new one. Aim for overlap so you are not without power or water on either end. In St. Pete, water service transfers typically need five business days notice.

Handle Florida-specific prep. If you are renting a storage unit for overflow items, choose a climate-controlled facility. Standard storage units in Florida can hit 120 degrees inside during summer, which damages wood furniture, electronics, vinyl records, and anything with adhesive. Check out our storage services if you need a reliable option.

Confirm building access details. If your new home is in a condo or managed building, confirm your elevator reservation, get the loading dock schedule, and submit your mover's certificate of insurance to the building manager. Do not leave this for the last minute.

Create a moving day essentials box. Pack a clearly labeled box or bag with everything you will need for the first 24 hours in your new home: toiletries, phone chargers, medications, a change of clothes, basic cleaning supplies, paper towels, toilet paper, snacks, and water bottles. In Florida, throw in sunscreen and a portable fan if your new place might not have the AC running right away.

1 Week Before Your Move

The finish line is in sight. This week is about tying up loose ends.

Finish packing. By now, the only things left unpacked should be daily essentials: a few dishes, basic toiletries, clothes for the week, and your bed linens. Everything else should be boxed, labeled, and ready to load.

Do a walkthrough of your current home. Check every closet, cabinet, shelf, and drawer. Look in the attic, garage, and any outdoor storage sheds. People forget items in these spots constantly.

Confirm your move details. Call your moving company to confirm the date, arrival time, crew size, and any special instructions. If you are working with Karma Movers, we will reach out to confirm details, but it never hurts to double-check.

Prep large furniture. Disassemble bed frames, remove table legs if possible, and take apart any shelving units. Keep all hardware in labeled zip-lock bags taped to the furniture piece they belong to. This saves a huge amount of time on loading day and prevents lost screws.

Clean out your refrigerator. Use up perishable food throughout the week. Defrost your freezer at least 24 hours before the move. A refrigerator that has not been defrosted will leak water all over the moving truck and your new floors.

Plan for pets and kids. Moving day is hectic, and open doors plus heavy items being carried through hallways is not safe for small children or animals. Arrange for a friend, family member, or pet sitter to handle them during the move. If that is not possible, set up a safe room that the movers will not need to enter.

Moving Day Morning

The truck is coming. Here is how to make the next few hours go as smoothly as possible.

Do a final sweep. Walk through every room one more time. Check behind doors, inside appliances (people leave things in ovens and dishwashers regularly), and in outdoor areas.

Clear pathways. Make sure the route from your front door to the truck is clear. Move any tripping hazards, prop open doors that the movers will use repeatedly, and if you have a long driveway or shared parking lot, make sure the truck has a clear spot close to the entrance.

Have water and snacks available for the crew. This is not required, but your movers will be working hard, especially during a St. Petersburg summer when temperatures hit the 90s by mid-morning. Cold water, sports drinks, and simple snacks go a long way. A crew that is hydrated and appreciated works more carefully with your belongings.

Stay available but out of the way. Be present to answer questions and point the crew to the right rooms, but let them do their job. Professional movers have a system for loading a truck efficiently, and hovering tends to slow things down.

Protect your floors. If you have hardwood or tile floors in your old or new home, ask your movers to use floor runners. At Karma Movers, we use protective coverings on floors and doorframes as standard practice, but it is worth confirming with any company you hire.

After the Movers Leave

Your stuff is in the new place. Here is what to do next.

Check the inventory. Walk through your new home and verify that all boxes and furniture pieces are accounted for. If you had a detailed inventory list (which your moving company should provide), use it to check off each item. Report any missing or damaged items immediately.

Unpack essentials first. Set up beds, open your essentials box, and get the bathroom functional. Everything else can wait. Trying to unpack the entire house on day one leads to burnout.

Test utilities. Make sure water, electricity, gas, internet, and AC are all working. In St. Petersburg, you do not want to spend your first night without air conditioning in July.

Update your address. Beyond mail forwarding, update your address with your bank, employer, insurance providers, DMV (Florida requires address updates within 10 days), and any subscription services.

Inspect your old home. If you are renting, go back within a day or two for a final walkthrough. Document the condition with photos and video for your records before the landlord does their inspection. This protects your security deposit.

Every interaction, from arranging our move to the moving day itself, was fantastic! They kept us informed leading up to the move, which was reassuring. We ended up using their services for two moves within a month, and each time was smooth and professional. Kris, Ray, and Marc were not only courteous but also had fantastic attitudes! They were incredibly professional and hardworking on both occasions. My family and I wholeheartedly recommend Karma Movers for anyone in need of moving services!
